"Neuronal populations recordings: why and how?" Christophe Pouzat (Video)

Mini-course

The recordings of neuron populations are more and more practiced in physiology laboratories. They are on several animal models and with different recording techniques, each with its strengths and weaknesses. In addition to the experimental difficulties specific to this type of recording, their analysis and interpretation generate various problems (and solutions, sometimes) where fruitful interactions arise between different disciplines: neurophysiology on the one hand and statistical / probability, physical and computer science on the other hand. We will begin by presenting a concrete experimental situation, motivated by a question specific to neuroscience, for which neuronal population recordings are indispensable. We will continue by presenting the different techniques currently used by linking them to their (often old) origins. This will also be an opportunity to recall or introduce the notions of cellular neurophysiology essential to the understanding of recording methods and their interpretation. We will continue with a discussion of analysis methods by trying to focus on ideas and their development rather than a synthetic but formal presentation.
