"Spoken language processing: from encoding to understanding. A challenge...for life!" Fanny Meunier

Mini-course

The understanding of spoken language is a daily activity, accessible to the vast majority of us. Yet, under it appearance of extreme simplicity, it covers complex processes.

In this presentation Fanny Meunier will expose the main characteristics of the speech signal and the human auditory system.
She will highlight the difficulties encountered during the connection between the two universes that are "the physical universe of the sounds of language and the symbolic one of statements ".
She will discuss the various stakes that arise throughout life:
  • when the baby learns his native language
  • when the adult must understand a speech signal degraded either by noise, or by a change of register or even language
  • as the aging adult begins to decline in hearing ability.
Data and models from the fields of linguistics, psychoacoustics, cognitive psychology and neuroscience will be used.
